Word Studies

In these works I am exploring various phrases and their potential meanings and impacts socially. Some phrases are taken from twitter feeds, or are common hashtags, or other online media where words are used, repurposed, subverted, or manipulated in other ways (or used as tools to manipulate). I translate the individual letters into a visual binary code, scramble the letters to form other words, and use these hidden words in new contexts. Sometimes they simply make an interesting series of lines, and are drawn or printed. This abstracted form helps disarm the often explosive original form of the words, allowing a more neutral space in which to contemplate intentions, histories, usages, and what else may lie within a phrase or word’s form.
