Threadmarks
Acrylic rug-hooking yarn, polyester felt, polyester tulle fabric, sewing and embroidery thread, acrylic, black spray paint. 5"x7", 2016.
In 2016 I participated in the Object Afterlife Art Challenge at MECCA, a local materials exchange organization committed to "to divert materials from the waste stream and bring them into our community’s creative endeavors." I was given acrylic rug-hooking yarn, and asked to make work that "exist[s] in the space where artistic discovery and conservation meet, inspiring us all to think differently about the materials we may consider waste." The Threadmarks series rose out of many attempts to sublimate this kitsch material into something more workable than 3" lengths of color-saturated plastic, and more open-ended than childhood craft projects.
As an artist I often find myself in conversation with new materials—exploring what they are and what they might yet become, which echoes my own internal discovery of who I am and who I am yet to be. This series served as an entree to working more abstractly; I was able to explore the subconscious more freely through line as an expression of the personal, intimate landscape.
